The Caged Bird Sings
The Caged Bird Sings bracelet is the first bracelet in our Black Lives Matter collection, and is inspired by Maya Angelou, the American author and poet, who as a black American woman suffered unimaginable abuses. Her poem "Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" pictures a bird within a cage signing about freedom - a life without the rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness - but still the beautiful bird sings of freedom. Our bracelet celebrates this poem - The gold band at its centre symbolises the bird, and the black and white glass beads around the bracelet symbolise the bars of the cage.
Whilst the bird sings joyfully in protest, our bracelet seeks to do the same, as we like to say - 'beauty protests with a noisy silence'. The Caged Bird sings to celebrate freedom which our bracelet seeks to do with beauty.
The Caged Bird Sings sits alongside our organic fabric bracelet, 'BLM', the acronym for Black Lives Matter.

So much has been said by so many people it's difficult to know what to add, so perhaps it's worth recalling what Abraham Lincoln, one of America's greatest presidents, had to say about the relevance of the Declaration of Independence to equality in a speech he made in 1858,
"Wise statesmen as they were [the Founders of America], they knew the tendency of prosperity to breed tyrants, and so they established these great self-evident truths, that when in the distant future some man, some faction, some interest, should set up the doctrine that none but rich men, or none but white men, were entitled to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of Independence and take courage to renew the battle which their fathers began – so that truth, justice, mercy, and all the humane and Christian virtues might not be extinguished from the land; so that no man would hereafter dare to limit and circumscribe the great principles on which the temple of liberty was being built.”
