Blue Iguanas
These spectacular lizards live in the Caribbean on the Island of Grand Cayman and, presently anyway, have been rescued from extinction with just 25 remaining at the beginning of the 21st Century. The usual story, famers destroying habitats with deforestation in order to grow crops and introducing their pets into the environment which then upset thousands of years of Nature in balance on this unique Island. Today there are estimated to be 400 in existence and the species is now classified as just endangered as opposed to critically endangered - it's ironic that this, the longest living of all lizards, living as long as 69 years should almost be cut short after millions of years on the planet. Nonetheless, so the tail of the Blue Iguana is a rare success story in saving species from extinction.
Growing up to 5 feet in length they only weigh in at about 25 pounds or 11 kgs, the size of a small dog. They are in fact grey, and turn blue when they meet members of their own species.
