The Rockhopper Penguin necklace is handmade with red, powder blue and gold coated Japanese glass beads. It celebrates this gorgeous and rather unusual little bird - unusual because it is not entirely black and white, but has red eyes and a red beak symbolised by the red glass beads in our design.
Our design seeks to capture the spirit of these little birds, and we must not forget that Penguins are birds, who cannot fly and hop around swimming around at just 7 kph in the sea - this compares with 25 kph of seals who hunt Penguins.
To make things worse, Rockhoppers often sleep whilst swimming in the water. But all that said, the Rockhopper is an aggressive little bird capable of making large and awful amounts of noise to protect itself, family and children from preiditors including other birds.
The Rockhopper is a spirited piece and combining it a friend's initials, as well as planting 10 Mangrove trees - every Rockhopper plants 10 trees and comes with a planting certificate and gift card in a fabric bag - is a wonderful gift that gives back to the planet as well as being personalised and quite unique.
