Amur Leopards
Amur leopards are the rarest big cats on Earth, only about 129 remain in the wild. Living in Russia and China, these Arctic-adapted biggish cats have fur that’s 3 inches deep to keep them warm in the cold, and raspy tongues to scrape frozen meat from frozen bones. As big as China and Russia are, these Leopards have lost over 80% of their habitat in the last 50 years, as their land is turned over to farming where they’re now seen as a threat to livestock and people. Meanwhile higher temperatures and bushfires are decimating the land itself and their prey, making survival tough for a cat that only lives to 15 years of age. Wildlife reserves, anti-poaching patrols, and breeding programs help. The 200 Leopards locked up in zoos may save this amazing cat from extinction altogether.
