Bald Eagle Population - A Conservation Success Story
Bald Eagles are a conservation success story which shows what can be done when there is a will to save animals. Tittering on the brink of extinction in the early 1960s, just 412 pairs of Bald Eagles remained. A symbol of the United States since 1782, the Bald Eagle was headed for extinction. Their plight led to the passing of the Endangered Species Preservation Act in 1967, today the Endangered Species Act, helping all threatened animals. The Bald Eagle was removed from endangered species listing in 2007 and today they can be found all over the United States. They are names after the Oldie English words ‘balde’ and ‘piebald’ which mean white, rather than hairless! Today they are the largest raptors in the world, with eyesight 8x better than humans, and a grip 10x tighter than humans. They have held on!
