White Rhino
There are 5 species of Rhino with varying population sizes: Sumatran (~30), Javan (~18), Greater One-horned Rhino in India (~2,100), African Black Rhino (~3,142), and the White Rhino, which has two populations in Africa, the northern population (2) and the southern population (~10,078), now functionally extinct with only 2 females remaining. Despite their name, White Rhinos are not actually white, “white” comes from the Afrikaans word wyd, meaning “wide,” referring to their broad, flat mouths adapted for grazing. White Rhinos can weigh up to 2,400 kg and run up to 50 km/h. They have poor eyesight but excellent hearing and smell. Surprisingly social, they often live in groups called crashes. Their horns are made of keratin, the same protein found in human hair and nails, and can regrow if broken or trimmed.

Weighing over 3 tonnes, White Rhinos are the 2nd largest land animal after elephants and are named after the Africaan’s word ‘wyd’, which means wide, because of their square shaped lips. Their principal threat is being hunted for their horns which are prized for medicinal purposes. Their horns grow up to 7 cms (3 inches) a year and are made of Keratin, like our hair and nails. Their horns, their principal source of protection in Nature, has become their Achilles Heel where humans are concerned.
