Olive Ridley Sea Turtles
It’s estimated there are around 800,000 Olive Ridley Sea Turtles which sounds a lot, but they are still endangered on the Pacific Coast of Mexico and vulnerable elsewhere. There used to be over 10 million! That gives you an idea of the dangers they face, ghost or discarded fishing nets, plastic bags which they think are food, climate change disrupting their breeding patterns with warmer beaches producing more females and, of course, people. Olive Ridley’s are the smallest of the Sea Turtles and their shells are Olive colored fused bone. Sea Turtles wear their bones on the outside! They have beaks, not teeth, made of Keratin, same as our nails, and Rhino horns. Sea Turtles have been around for over 100 million years and we’ve lost over 90% of them in the last 50.
The Iberian Lynx
The Iberian Lynx is so called because it is made up of links or 'Lynx' and, like the gorgeous feline - the Iberian Lynx - it symbolises, its shades of gold. The Iberian Lynx lives on the Iberian Peninsula in Spain and is also known as the Spanish Lynx. With a population of less than 100 at the beginning of the century, the Iberian Lynx is on the road to success with the current count around 2,000. They have a tawny gold coat and a beard which makes them look very cute indeed! Iberian Lynx's grow to about three feet or a metre and live amongst the trees!
Heart Reef
This unique bracelet is inspired by Heart Reef, a naturally formed coral reef creating an island in the shape of a heart found on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The only heart shaped reef in the world, it measures just 17 meters across. Heart Reef is a living animal made up of trillions of tiny polyps living within the calcium corals, which look like flowers, or 'the rain forests of the seas' as they are often called. When sea temperatures rise 1 degree or more above average, the animal polyps are shocked and forced to leave their coral skeleton home. 90% of the coral skeleton's food is provided by it's resident polyps and if the polyps are away too long the reef starts to bleach and then die! Climate Change is heating the seas, changing weather patterns and therefore ocean currents, upsetting order within the oceans, and too often killing lifeforms which can't adapt fast enough. Taking over 200 million years to form, this iconic Australian reef is a symbol of enduring love.
