What better way to send hugs and kisses to someone you love than with a Band of Courage? Every time they look at it they are getting hugs and kisses, perhaps a thousand times a day - at least as often as you look at a watch if worn on the wrist.

But as a band it can also be sown onto clothes, used as decoration or lying there looking back at you sitting on a dressing table - always saying and doing  the same thing - sending hugs and kisses! It really gets passionate when the hugs and kisses come in red bullion or glass red beads on black or green fabric! It's a great way to say, I love you, without actually saying it.

Size & Fitting

The organic fabric band measures 33cm / 13 inches in length. To fit to size, the length can be trimmed with scissors. Always cut at an angle to minimise fraying of the cotton.

Worn on the wrist or ankles, it is double tied at the back to hold the band in place. The band can be sown onto clothes or onto soft furnishings or used as a decoration. 

The Fabric and Yarns 

The processes for making the yarns and dyes for our Bands of Courage date back over a thousand years using authentic processes and ingredients which are not just natural, but highly medicinal.

The fabrics and yarns are certified organic cotton used in the manufacture of clothing and our bands begin as greige or unfinished fabric which pass through 5 stages before recycling:-

1. De-sizing, washing the greige cloth with natural mineral-rich water and sea salts to remove sizing, gums and oils.

2. Bleaching, using direct sunlight, and a combination of natural grass and animal manure.

3. Mordanting, to make colours bright, they are impregnated with mordants such as myraballam, rhubarb leaves, oils, minerals, alum, iron (no heavy metal mordants are used). 

4. Dyeing, using rich herbs to dye the fabric by immersing the plants themselves directly into the dye bath - the dyes are listed below.

5. Finishing, by sprinkling the fabric with water and aloe-vera and stretched using hand-rolls; and, finally . . .

6. Recycling all the solid and liquid wastes, which are used for farming, water the fields and manure.

The dyes used are:-

Haritaki - natural green in colour, it is only grown in parts of the Himalayas and is known as the King of the Herbs. It is a highly potent herb for treating many serious diseases;

Turmeric - a yellow dye, also called 'Indian saffron', it comes from the ginger family and is great for skin complaints;

Indigo - a blue dye from the leaves of the Indigo tincoria, and cures gout amongst other things!

Madder - a red dye known as the 'king of dyes' as it contains alizarin, it is also used as a treatment for pain;

Pomegranate - an ocher-yellow dye which improves colourfastness and as a medicinal herb is great for the heart!

Onion - is used to produce dye colours in shades of orange, yellow, rust and brown, and it's especially good for treating serious skin diseases like Leprosy.

There are two hand embroidered finished used to create the inscriptions on our fabric bands are Japanese Glass Beads;

Every band is lovingly made by hand with each bead individually sown into the fabric creating unique little differences so no two bands are exactly the same.

Say hello to the Hawksbill and Leatherback sea turtle tempered glass bracelets. The design of each is inspired by these two 100 million year old turtles. Hawksbill Sea Turtles are so called because their mouths are narrow and pointed, resembling the beak of a hawk. The Hawksbill is the smallest of the sea turtles, growing 2 to 3 feet long and weighing a massive (for its size) 100 pounds owing to the weight of its shell. There are now around 21,500 nesting Hawksbill Turtles left in the world spread across 5 populations. When you think that thousands of turtles are killed every year, you can see why the Hawksbill is now a 'critically endangered' species i.e. on the verge of extinction.

We've created a bracelet capturing the colours of the Hawksbill's shell - the hues of browns and greens it collects on this armour plating as it migrates around the world. The Hawksbill looks almost iridescent after swimming perhaps millions of miles in the deep. Whilst great travelers, their habitats are the world's coral reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef in the world, is a favorite  Celebrate this wonderful creature who is over 100 million years old - they have been on the planet a lot longer than us! 

The Leatherback Sea Turtle

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is the closest living relative to the dinosaur and the third heaviest reptile in the world (after two species of crocodile). They grow up to 7 feet long and can weigh 2,000 pounds, that's almost a tonne and they eat jelly fish! The population has declined by 40% since 1980 and there are just 25,000 nesting females left today after being on the planet for over 100 million years outliving every other species. Plastic bags, which they mistake for jellyfish, looks to be their nemesis. Our tempered glass tortoiseshell bracelet seeks to capture some of their magnificence in the colours especially as it captures the light. Leatherbacks, like other sea turtles, are greatly dependent on the Great Barrier Reef.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles can't retract their heads and legs into their bodies, so their shells aren't really homes as such, more like an armoured shield. And it is this armour that's helped them to become one of the oldest living species on the planet today - turtles were trawling the world's oceans over 100 million years ago when T-Rex was hunting dinosaurs on land. 

Sadly their shield is no match for the threats humanity has introduced into the oceans including plastic bags which they eat mistaking them for jellyfish (their favourite food); discarded fishing nets, which they get caught up in and drown and, of course, they are hunted for meat. But it's Global Warming that will likely determine their destiny. In the oceans, warmer waters are bleaching the reefs destroying the turtles' natural habitats, and on land, the hotter sands in which turtles lay their eggs are producing more female than male turtles. The heat of the sand in which the eggs gestate determines the sex of the hatchlings and, the warmer it gets, the fewer males and the fewer eggs in future. People, the seas and the lands all seem totally aligned against these gorgeous little creatures who've been around forever.

These handmade bracelets come in two styles:

A stretch bracelet which measures approximately 17cm / 6.7 inches in length which may vary slightly with bead pattern. 

An adjustable bracelet which can fit any size of wrist between 13 cm (5.2 inches) and 24 cm (9.5 inches. It may even be used as an anklet for children and those with smaller feet, but check your measurements carefully before ordering.

Hope is an innate optimism we are all born with, it's what keeps us going when we face difficult times, and when we face the impossible its is the last thing we we lose.

The Siberian Tiger 

Also called the Amur Tiger, is the largest wild cat, with males reaching up to 320 kg (700 lbs) and over 3 meters (10 feet) long. Native to the Russian Far East and parts of northeast China, they are built for the cold sporting thick fur and a fat layer to survive freezing winters.

Siberian Tigers can leap up to 10 meters (33 feet) in a single bound and jump vertically over 3 meters (10 feet)! Their roar reaches 114 decibels, as loud as a chainsaw, and can be heard up to 3 kilometers (2 miles) away. Though they don’t laugh, they make a friendly “chuff” sound to communicate calmly. A group of tigers is called a streak or an ambush, but since they’re solitary animals, you rarely see them together. With only just over 300in the wild, they remain endangered due to habitat loss and poaching.

Turmeric - a yellow dye, also called 'Indian saffron', it comes from the ginger family and is great for skin complaints;

Indigo - a blue dye from the leaves of the Indigo tincoria, and cures gout amongst other things!

Madder - a red dye known as the 'king of dyes' as it contains alizarin, it is also used as a treatment for pain;

Pomegranate - an ocher-yellow dye which improves colourfastness and as a medicinal herb is great for the heart!

Onion - is used to produce dye colours in shades of orange, yellow, rust and brown, and it's especially good for treating serious skin diseases like Leprosy.

Every band is lovingly made by hand and has its own unique little differences so no two bands are exactly the same.

Every band plants 10 trees and comes in a drawstring fabric pouch with your planting certificate (which can be addressed personally) and a gift card on which you write a message and which also explains how your trees help combat global warming.

This beautiful band measures 33cm / 13 inches in length and is worn by tying a double knot to fit. To fit to size, the length can be trimmed with scissors. Always cut at an angle to minimise fraying of the cotton.

Worn on the wrist or ankles, it is double tied at the back to hold the band in place. The band can be sown onto clothes or onto soft furnishings or used as a decoration.

The Fabric and Yarns 

The processes for making the yarns and dyes for our Bands of Courage date back over a thousand years using authentic processes and ingredients which are not just natural, but highly medicinal.

The fabrics and yarns are certified organic cotton used in the manufacture of clothing and our bands begin as greige or unfinished fabric which pass through 5 stages before recycling:-

1. De-sizing, washing the greige cloth with natural mineral-rich water and sea salts to remove sizing, gums and oils.

2. Bleaching, using direct sunlight, and a combination of natural grass and animal manure.

3. Mordanting, to make colours bright, they are impregnated with mordants such as myraballam, rhubarb leaves, oils, minerals, alum, iron (no heavy metal mordants are used). 

4. Dyeing, using rich herbs to dye the fabric by immersing the plants themselves directly into the dye bath - the dyes are listed below.

5. Finishing, by sprinkling the fabric with water and aloe-vera and stretched using hand-rolls; and, finally . . .

6. Recycling all the solid and liquid wastes, which are used for farming, water the fields and manure.

The dyes used are:-

Haritaki - natural green in colour, it is only grown in parts of the Himalayas and is known as the King of the Herbs. It is a highly potent herb for treating many serious diseases;
