Beluga Whales
The Beluga Whales live in the icy Arctic Sea around Alaska and Northern Canada. They are named after the Russian word “bielo”, meaning “white” as, at 8 years of age their skin changes colour from grey to white. They are also known as the “canaries of the sea” thanks to their chorus of squeals, chirps, and whistles and talk by changing the shape of their heads, their bulbous forehead is called a melon! Living 35 - 50 years, populations are reducing, with the principle threats being hunted by people and Polar Bears, oil spillages and pollution, and of course, the loss of the Arctic ice itself which is melting at a rate of over 1% a year. Colonies like the pod in the Cook Inlet living closer to people, are endangered. These clever, chatty Whales are having to adapt to survive. One to watch!
