Polar Bears
Polar Bears are the largest carnivores on Earth and are classified as marine mammals able to swim over 100km in icy waters. They’re called “polar” because they live only in the Arctic North Pole. With black skin, blue tongues, and translucent fur that appears white, adult males can grow up to 12 feet long and nearly a tonne in weight. Despite their size, only 2% of hunts succeed. Around 26,500 remain (best guess), with their habitat, the sea ice covering the Arctic Sea, melting at a rate of 13% per decade. A 2001 - 2010 study in the Beaufort Sea showed the population decline of 40% over ten years due to loss of see ice, due in turn to climate change. Polar Bears live to 30 years of age, mums have maybe 15 cubs over their lifetime, which sadly won’t be enough to see them survive beyond the end of the 21st century.
