Heart Reef is remarkably small, measuring just 17 meters across. And yet, it sits within the vast expanse of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system stretching an incredible 2,300 kilometers—almost the length of the entire United States.
Discovered only in 1975, Heart Reef was first spotted by a seaplane pilot taking tourists on a scenic flight over the reef. That’s how well hidden this little gem was, despite living in plain sight for millions of years.
What Is a “Bommie”?
Heart Reef is what marine scientists call a “bommie” a coral outcrop that grows higher than its surroundings. Over time, bommies rise like little islands of life, and at low tide, they can even break the surface of the water. This is why Heart Reef is sometimes affectionately referred to as “Heart Island.”

A Living, Breathing Heart
What many people don’t realise is that coral reefs are not plants. They are living communities of tiny animals called polyps. These polyps cluster together, building calcium carbonate structures that become the beautiful reefs we admire. Each strand of coral in Heart Reef is alive. And each polyp, though microscopic, plays its part in building a structure that has been evolving for over 200 million years. That’s longer than the age of the dinosaurs! Heart Reef is more than a marvel it is a symbol of enduring love, crafted by the quiet, persistent work of millions of tiny creatures.
Under Threat: The Bleaching Crisis
But this ancient love story is now under threat. Since the early 2000s, the Great Barrier Reef has suffered a series of mass coral bleaching events. These occur when ocean temperatures rise too high, stressing the coral polyps and forcing them to expel the symbiotic algae they rely on for color and energy. What’s left behind is a ghostly white reef bleached, weakened, and often dying. More than half of the Great Barrier Reef has already experienced significant bleaching, and the damage is not evenly spread. Smaller, more delicate formations like Heart Reef are at even greater risk. These tiny reef communities try to bounce back, but with each new bleaching event, they face a harder and harder battle for survival.
A Heartbreaking Forecast
If global temperatures continue to rise, scientists predict that reefs like Heart Reef will not survive the next 100 years. That would be the end of a story that has lasted 200 million years a loss that goes far beyond heartbreak. It would be the silencing of one of Earth’s most resilient and beautiful voices.
