Black Jaguar
The word “jaguar” comes from the Tupi-Guarani word yaguar, meaning “he who kills with one leap.” Black Jaguars, Black Panthers, and Black Leopards are all the same big cat, also called the “Ghosts of the Forest,” because they hunt at night, padding around the Amazon rainforest unseen. There are over 100,000 Jaguars remaining, but sadly just 600 Black Jaguars, a genetic trait that gives them their sleek black coat. Jaguars only live for 12 years in the wild and a litter typically has two cubs. So Nature makes survival tough. Jaguars biggest enemies are cattle Ranching and Soybean farming, the principle causes of deforestation in the Amazon, which has lost over 25% of its trees. Even with the strongest bite of any of the big cats, there’s little they can do to protect their home.
