Green Sea Turtles

Population numbers of Green Sea Turtles were officially last estimated over 20 years ago, and no one seems to know how many nesting females are left today (we can’t count the males as they stay at sea). 90,000 remaining was the last estimate but between 30,000 and 90,000 are killed each year, by people, for food. Green Sea Turtles have survived over 150 million years and their future hangs in the balance. Mums live up to 100 years old, they nest every 3 years laying up to 500 eggs over 5 sittings in the year, which is 5,000 to 10,000 hatchlings per mum per lifetime. Survival rates for the hatchlings is 1 in 1,000, so 1 mum might have 5 to 10 hatchlings that survive to adulthood over her lifetime. Not great odds given the current population and the mortality rates, as the population continues to decline.
