The Australian Gouldian Finch

The Australian Gouldian Finch, also called the Rainbow Finch or Lady Finch, is one of the most beautiful small birds in the world. Native to Australia these beauties are found in the Northern Territories and Kimberly in particular. Their population has declined from hundreds of thousands to just 2,400 today. They are proof positive of the decline in Aussie woodland ecosystems through deforestation and bushfires. Finches live up to 6 years, they stick with their partner for life and seasonally produce 4 – 8 eggs with the young leaving the nest in just 40 days to live their own lives. Beauty, it seems, is no guarantee of survival!
