American Eagle

The American Eagle, has been a symbol on the United States Seal since 1782, and was adopted as America’s national bird in 2024. With less than 400 pairs left in the 1950s, the Eagle was saved from extinction by Rachel Carson and John F Kennedy - she discovered that the pesticide, DDT, as a public health hazard, (which was later found to weaken Eagle egg shells, preventing the young from hatching). John F Kennedy supported her kickstarting the environmental legislation that would save them. Even today, 80% of Eagles die before the age of 5, and adults live to just 25 years of age. Their almost extinction led to the passing of the Endangered Species Preservation Act in 1967 and the EPA as it is today. With 200,00 pairs alive in 2025 these Raptors are a huge success story, to be celebrated.
