Pink Lakes

Lake Hillier in Western Australia is a natural wonder, one of Nature’s pink lakes. Sitting on small island in the Indian Ocean, Middle Island, the lake measures just 600 meters long. Experts still debate the precise reason why she’s pink, all linked to its incredibly high salt content and the combination of algae (cellular plants) and bacteria (living cells with DNA) who cohabit the lake and whose colours and secretions turn Lake Hiller Pink. Lake Esperence, another pink lake in Western Australia, is no longer pink due to over harvesting of its salt, an example of the damaging effects of human interventions in Nature. Pink Lake Hillier lies beyond human intervention, an elegant reminder to us all of the enduring beauty offered to us by Nature.
