Snow Leopards
Snow leopards are elusive big cats native to the high mountain ranges of Central and South Asia, including the Himalayas. They grow up to 4 feet long, with thick, powerful tails reaching about 3 feet, and weigh up to 100 pounds. Adapted to cold, rugged terrain, they have thick, insulating fur and powerful hind legs that allow them to leap up to 15 meters in a single bound. Unlike other big cats, snow leopards cannot roar, they communicate through hisses, growls, and a unique “chuffing” sound. These solitary creatures are most active at dawn and dusk, preying on blue sheep and ibex. Their long tails help with balance and also serve as warm wraps. Known as the “ghosts of the mountains”, they are masters of stealth and camouflage.
