Kemps Ridley Sea Turtles
The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles are the smallest and rarest of all 7 species of sea turtles. They are less than a meter long but still weigh 100 kgs. They live in the Mexican Gulf and East Coast United States. Principal threats include ghost (discarded) fishing nets, people and climate change. Kemp’s Ridley numbers dropped to around 200 nesting females in the 1980s but have since recovered to around 9,000. No one knows how long Kemp Ridley live, likely to be around 50 years like the Olive Ridley cousins. Females will nest annually after maturity at around 13 years, laying 100 eggs a year, typically on the same beach, 9,000 females might lay 900,000 eggs a year, but with a survival rate of 1 in 1,000, the current population can still only produce 900 surviving adults a year. Let’s hope!
