Heart Reef

Heart Reef is a naturally formed coral reef in the shape of a heart and one of over 700 reefs that make up Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

She's the only heart shaped reef in the world and measures just 17 metres across.

Heart Reef is a living animal, made up of trillions of tiny polyps living within the calcium corals, which look like flowers.

When sea temperatures rise 1 degree or more above average, these animal polyps are sent into shock and leave their coral skeleton home.

The coral skeleton's food is provided by these resident polyps and when they leave, the coral starves, bleaches and eventually dies!

We describe Heart Reef as Australia's symbol of enduring love, why, because she's 200 million years old, that's enduring, and love because she's living and shaped like a heart!
